Uvari

Uvari - a coastal /fishing village located in Tirunelveli disrict,Tamilnadu, India

Uvari's historical name was Obeer Pattanam and it was once ruled by Pandian king

Nearest Airport is Tuticorin and it is located 50km from Kanyakumari which is well connected with roadways.  It is located 70kms from Tirunelveli which is well connected with both road and railways. As we started our trip from Tuticorin we took a private car and reached the spot within two hours of time.

Places to visit in Uvari:
  • St.Antony's Church - This is the only St.Antony church in Tamilnadu which is located beside sea. 
  • Swayambulingawamy Temple - This temple looks very beautiful surrounded by coconut trees and palm trees on the sea shore. Main deity here is Lord shiva, here he graces as a swayambumurthi. There are four fresh water springs located near the sea shore but the water is used only for abhisekam purpose.

How to reach the place - Frequent buses and cars are available from nearby places. Trains are also available from nearest stations.

Interesting facts about the temple :

  • One of the six abodes of Lord Murugan 
  • Pilgrims visit from many parts of world say America, Canada, Australia, Singapore etc
  • This temple is famous for its annual kanda sasti festival (October month). This is a six days festival and on an average 5 lakh devotees participate in this festival every year.
  • Famous for its panner leaf vibhuthi. It is said that the prasadam would cure many incurable diseases. 
  • Temple is located very close to the beach
  • This temple is not affected by tsumani though it is located near beach
  • Naazhi kinaru - Fresh water spring - Though it is located near beach the spring contains fresh water.
  • Fresh water spring maintains the water level inspite of bailing out water
  • Pilgrims took bath in naazhi kinaru follwed by beach bath since bathing in beach and naazhi kinaru are considered to be holy
